Avett Bros. cut short in big moment

Well, that was sort of anticlimactic.

The Avett Brothers' appearance on the David Letterman show was cut short Monday night (actually, early Tuesday morning). The band was a minute and a half, maybe two minutes, into the song "I and Love and You" when CBS (or maybe WBTV here in Charlotte) cut to commercial. (UPDATE: Fans from other cities tweet that they saw everything just fine. Could the Charlotte station be the only one that cut off the hometown band?)

The show came back on with Letterman standing with the band, saying "great song, guys" and waving goodbye.

Avett fans on Twitter are NOT happy.

What was on sounded good, if truncated -- if you know the song, you might have been able to tell that the intro was cut short. Late-night talk shows are notorious for giving bands small time windows, and the full version of "I and Love and You" -- which runs five minutes on the CD -- probably didn't fit. The show might have been running late, anyway -- after the Avetts were cut short I looked at the clock and it was 12:33. The show ends at 12:35.

It's been awhile since I've watched a late-night talk show all the way through... that felt like a loooong hour. The first two guests were Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives") and Dr. Mehmet Oz (surgeon and frequent "Oprah" guest). Letterman did get off a Carolina-related joke in the monologue -- he said John Edwards had been through New York, and then showed an impregnated Statue of Liberty. We should be so proud.

We'll see if there's any Letterman bump for the Avetts... the album goes on sale Tuesday. As in, today.

Here is a video posted overnight to YouTube.com:

I was extremely disappointed with whoever decided to cut to commercial early. I assume, because of the comercials' local nature, that it was WBTV. I feel like Conan has a better show, and I hope that even though Letterman's show is at best mediocre these days, the Avett's will see a nice little boost from what ended up being a great performance, cut short by some idiot at WBTV.

I'm in Orlando, got the whole song. It sucks that NC TV stations don't support local talent. That's what's wrong with the music industry this days. Anyways... Make sure to pick up a copy today!!

WBTV just showed us why they are BUSH LEAGUE. No excuse. Running local ads during a local band's NATIONAL DEBUT. WBTV YOU SUCK!

I hope the Observer does some investigative journalism to identify the idiot (or maybe the computer) that cut away to the commercials.

I gotta say, I saw the whole thing and I didn't think it was their best performance. They both seemed nervous and were over-singing what ought to be a quiet, contemplative song. It's literally the only Avett performance I've ever seen that was anything less than stellar. Ah well. Still buying the album first thing tomorrow!

Last week WBTV went black during Bruce Willis' appearance on Letterman and a minute later, came back in the middle of Craig Ferguson. Five minutes later, they jumped back into the Bruce Willlis interview. During the President's recent primetime speech, they interrupted with a 30-second commercial! The unemployment rate is really high--I'm guessing they could find engineers who could do better.

WBTV seems to making a habit of this kind of activity. They purposely once cut out the last 15 minutes of CSI-Miami to show weather two counties over. They stayed on the weather story for 35 minutes and never showed the end of the CSI show. They received several angry calls and emails on that one.

Its OK. Avetts are not that good anyway - might as well cut them off. They represent a dumbing down of American cultural and artistic tastes.

cut short in Charleston as well. the Brothers did not get where they are by the local/national media anyway...keep the movement going forward!!

that tv station sucks!! i am not a fan of thi sband, but that was not fair!! they should make it up to them !!

I simply tuned the TV to WFMY Channel 2 in Greensboro and watched the remainder of the song there. (Channel 2's digital signal is surprisingly strong and can be picked up in NE Charlotte and other parts of the rea). And I said to myself "Channel 3 blew it." For what it's worth, it appears that there was only a minute to a minute and a half left in the song, and then "Late Night" cut to a commercial block.

they suck

I know there are lots of new fans of the band, but this was not their national television debut. They played Conan a year or two ago.

I am visiting Buffalo and WIVB Channel 4 played the entire song. Charlotte local stations sucked 12 years ago when I moved here and still suck today. This is just embarassing.

Sorry TAB isn't on your level of the typical watered-down American music scene (i.e. DMB, Pink, Hanna Montana, and other no talent a$$clowns). You wouldn't know real talent if it punched you in the throat. You just don't get it...actually I'm pretty glad of that.

I suppose you think Kanye's music is an intellectual revival don't you!

TT, please use whatever influence you have to get WBTV to at least make a statement as to what happened last night. A great gesture on their part would be to re-air the performance or to at least offer the video for friends, family and fans.

marginal at best. vocally average. i think hippies and hippie wannabe's kinda like this group cause that is mainly what they are, which is fine. kinda sloppy roots based stuff.

That being said i do like a few of their songs. murder in the city and their cover of how i got to memphis are very good. I wish them well and look forward to anything they do.

I live in CLT and have DirecTV. The song was cut for me as well but it was just the VERY last few seconds of it - so it ended w/ "...I And Love" (instead of "I and Love and You"). Definitely a BUMMER!

This is the first time I'd seen / heard them. Not that impressed.

most people that like them, overlook their lack of musicalskills since they have shaggy hair and beards. Are we sure they aren't from asheville or boone?

Anonymous said...

The who brothers?

i was playing hackey sack and missed their performance, i love them though.

I thought at first I was seeing a promo for the old movie "Deliverance". It's amazing what passes for music today. Oh well, everybody has their own preferemce.

I was so angry when The Avett Brothers got cut off, it was the first time I had ever seen Scott Avett nervous like that, you could see a vulneralbility that has never been present before and I wanted to see the whole performance. With that said...I'm also glad to know that it didn't happen nationwide and rest of the country got to see them. As for some of the comments, I can't get over how ignorant some people are... The beauty of The Avett Brothers is their ability to stay true to themselves and for someone to leave comments judging them based on their hair and other miniscule issues that are unrelated to their musical ability is unnerving. The hardest thing about rising to the top is all the people that want to knock you back to the bottom, but I have faith The Avetts will make it :)

The problem was caused by a computer at WBTV when the master control person set it to cut away to computer one minute early. It's not some evil plot to deny adoring local fans of the Avetts. And no, I don't work for WBTV.

Watch the whole song on CBS or YouTube and get over it.

Anonymous said...

Scott Avett would probably be the first to admit that his banjo skills are nowhere close to Eric Weissberg's (Dueling Banjo's performer for the "Deliverance" tune).

By the way, it was written by a local: Artur Smith.

Did you folks forget? WBTV cut to commercial on the President; this is just a Concord Band. Why is anyone surprised?

Anonymous said...

The people that were saying that that they suck and they are not that good like groups like the Black eye pea and Milley Sirus. Just listen to there words like bam boom pow. I wrote this so when thoses children get home from middle school they could read this.

So... who is it exactly that say these guys are worth listening too? Seriously? This video was a waste of bandwidth.

Might I suggest that you let the music reviews be submitted by people at the Observer who are actually *qualified* to comment?

Anonymous said...

What makes one qualified?

Can you please move on to something relevant like trying to find solutions to all of these recent (and high publicized) early teen pregnancies, health care or even where to find the best chitlins' and fatback. Anyone can get on national TV; just ask Skipper Beck.

Anonymous said...

these guys are way over hyped...

happy to see home town boys make good ....but the talent is not there....there are so many other great NC bands that deserve this HYPE

Anonymous said...

Talent rarely dictates success in the manufactured music biz.

I'm an Avetts fan. Not as die-hard as some, but more so than most. I've just got a general question for the Avetts' critics on this blog: who are the bands you think are worth listening to/following these days? After your posts, lots of people posted some pretty un-thought out things like "People who don't like the Avett Brothers listen to Black Eyed Peas and Hannah Montana" and stuff. I'm just curious to see who you Avetts critics prefer to a band who, in my humble opinion, is one of the best out there.

daniel: OCMS is a good one to start on.

They sound like themselves. Maybe there's something to be said for that.

At the end of the day, they make women swoon, and that's where the money's at. Take it to the bank.

Anonymous said...

Never heard of these guys so I thought I'd check them out on YouTube. Marginal at best and I WANTED to like them. Sorry.

Anonymous said...

they make a certain kind of fella swoon as well. beam me up scotty.

Anonymous said...

It's no use arguing with people who don't like the Avett Brothers, and refer to it as the dumbing down of music. These aren't top 40 pop and rap fans. These are the guys in Ed Hardy and True Religion who only listen to the typical date rapist fare like Nickleback, Saliva, etc... Prove me wrong though, prove to me you like something a little bit of depth.

HELL, WBTV didn't cut them off, they got the GONG and that was seriously slow in coming. Prediction: No one will be standing in line to see them play the Cabarass County Fair.
