Today we're going to start what I think will be a weekly feature here on the blog: 100 Words or Less. I'll throw out a topic every Monday morning, and your job is to comment on it in, you guessed it, 100 words or less.
This week's question: What's the future for Sarah Palin? To me, she has the widest range of possibilities of any politician in America -- "world domination" or "near-total obscurity" seem to be equally likely outcomes at this point. Where do you think she'll end up, and why? Have at it. Just keep it on-topic, and keep the length to... you know.

Sarah Palin is finished as a national politician. But she will do well with her new show on Fox News. She is much more like Rush Limbaugh than Barack Obama. I especially liked Peggy Noonan's take:

Sarah who????
Sarah has a future like the Charlotte Observer
Sarah Palin's future belongs to Sarah Palin. Holding her own reins, riding tall in her saddle, defusing the explosive dichotomy of the instinct to lead a generation with that of family preservation. She reminds me of that “Mama Bear” mentality of fierce protectionism and knowing when to leave the cubs to do it on their own. A blend of qualities this country desperately needs, and we know it.
“The left” with all the hatred and hot air spewed with the manliness of Maddow and the girly slap fight persona of Olberman do nothing but verify Palin’s effectiveness, and future.
My political expertise? Well, I can see the end of Governor Palin's political career from my front porch.
If she was sooooo finished, the main-stream media with their handlers at DNC wouldn't have tried to keep dumping on her day in and day out. They clearly consider her a threat.
I see her as a washed up crack head in five years. Her days will end when her daughter shoots her mistaking her for a moose.
She may have some sort of future as a TV talk show host or an X-rated star. Other than that, she is a zero. And no, I am not worried about her, I simply find her funny. Mush like Michael Jackson, she is a train wreck that we are all watching.
I think she do as she said, publish a book, make some speeches and stump for candidates. The Left would love for her to go away, but I suspect that ain't happening. The funny thing is she doesn't really have to do anything to get the Left commenting. The Left really dislikes her for some reason. I think it's simply fear. Considering the lousy campaign McCain ran, it was kind of remarkable the number of votes he got. I'm not 100% sure of her viability for 2012 but it is early and a whole lot could happen to change that.
If Palin has plans to emerge as a political heavy-weight, she needs to get her critics in line - not to mention her grandson's father.
Sarah Palin's political career is history. Sarah Palin as a "brand" doesn't look too much brighter. Next.
Why we Independents support Sarah!
Simple: She did not come with them but she grew her own set having to deal with all those people Obama has claimed he would go against, but we have found out he is just a front man for all of them.
The fact is I and a lot of other Independents will vote for her.
Just look at her base of who all voted for her in Alaska the largest collection of Independents in the country.
Unaffiliated are not a color just a voter!
So spew your parties hate, we vote for the person.
My opinion, Sarah's time has past. She was needed by McCain to combat the "old guy" status. Sex sells even more so in politics. Money, power, and sex, oh my! She's a looker but over the long haul, not hardy enough to pull her load...
English please, Larry
100 words or less on Sarah Palin?
Less
Sarah Palin will run for office again and lose again, but in the interim, she will make a ton of money like her male counterpart, Rush Limbaugh. Talking heads do well with idiots like Republicans and religious nuts. Oh, did I mentions they also do well with racists ?
I'm at a loss. She stepped dowm. But the haters bring her up every day. It shows how scared of her the America hating liberals are.
Once Obama destroys all he can of America. She may well be the one chosen to rebuild it.
I don't think she has much of a future in politics. I don't really care for her...I wish she would go away.
Sarah Falin is failing again! What a joke she is--I can see from my deck across to Alaska and she is out there somewhere on the bridge to nowhere.
The feature is a fine idea, but shouldn't the title utilize correct grammar?
Her future will consist of being ridiculed and harassed by the media when in reality she is likely a good person that was doing a good job in Alaska as governor.
I only wish her the best. I hope that we can get good normal family people like her to keep doing good things for this country.
Welcome Back Tom!
As far as Sarah, "quitter" sums it up in one word or less.
I find it amusing that "Palinites" think that liberal people find her intimidating. The reality is we find her appalling. To think that someone with no credibility or higher intellect is worthy of being considered for any important role in government is down right embarrassing. Realistically I do not mind if she stays around. She will continue to consume the percentage of voters that think relating to a person of power based on hunting practices outweighs a persons ability to make enormous decisions that effects the lives of over 300 million people.
Sarah Palin is bad for America. Even her own.
I think Sarah Palin is the greatest thing that has happened on the political stage since Reagan. She is normal and knows what real life and work is. She is not a slickered down politician that will say anything to get re-elected. I would vote for her in any election and think she will be an American Leader for years to come.
I hope she stays around in the news. Keep showing the country how bad of a pick this was for the GOP. How bad it was for America and how bad it would be in the eyes of any other country having to sit next to her in a meeting. "Dont use those big dirty bombs there don't you know, wink."
I think she appeals to a small number of conservatives and maybe some conservative-leaning independents. She will be useful for keeping the conservative base energized. I don't think she has the political savvy or intellectual horsepower to do much more than make money from books, appearances, and speeches for the people that already agree with her. Don't see her changing many people's minds about anything important.
She will stay in the GOP, but start a group to try and attract others as well, so that she is the only person with that brand. You can't win without getting strong pull from Independents, even though 70% of Pubs recently polled said they would vote for her - it's not enough. She will try to create a virtual 3rd party and may, create a real one. Think about this combo in 2012 - Palin/Paul.
Sarah Palin got very comfortable in her designer wardrobe. She'll go wherever the money is.
Wait-n-see...
Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to the Republican Party. Democrats hope she’ll get a job as a TV or radio commentator, and in that way constantly remind Americans why they should vote Democratic. Like the Tom Eagleton fiasco of the 1974Democratic campaign, it will be a race to see whether Sarah can run far enough away from scrutiny to live a normal life, or whether the Republican National Committee can push her far enough away to avoid any more damage. Her only hope for political revival is if Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic Party nominee in 2012.
I don't understand the hate that is generated by this women. She is a public figure who has an opinion about something. She stands for what she beleives in, unlike so many other people. Whatever she shoose to do I hope tha she is successful.
I wouldn't count Sarah Palin out simply based on this latest flake-out. She may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but a tool she surely is. She's vitally important to the GOP in terms of keeping their evangelical base energized. Those folks don't ask for much from their political heroes, just the willingness to bash liberals any time & any place, and fealty to their core issues of opposing women's reproductive rights and gay rights in general. Nothing else much matters to 'em but it sure helps if you're, you know, hot. Sarah delivers on all counts.
Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air in the political arena. If liberals would stop hating for a minute and take a look at what she is trying to do they may see another side of her. She is trying to unite AMERICA, not a political party or ideal. Stop your Palin-bashing, give her an unbiased chance and let's see what she is made of.
Sarah Palin will make her money and stay out of the media light. Are you sure this was your idea Tom or tonya jamesons. The observer is worst than star magazine. But entertaining.
Yep, Sarah's trying to unite America. She's doing her darndest to unite the Evangelical right-wing nut cases against gays, her fellow women and anything else that doesn't meet her "the Christian majority rules with a heavy hand" type of anti-individual rights philosophy. By the way, our nation's founders were liberals, who came up with a "radical" new idea - a Constitution to end the religious and secular tyranny that Palin is associated with.
I do not like her because of her total disregard for the wildlife of Alaska. Her refusal to stop aerial hunting of wolves and to protect the environment against gobal warming which would protect polar bears is disgusting. I don't trust anyone who has such disregard for wildlife.
America's seen "what she's made of" and wants none of it; otherwise she and McCain would have been swept into office last fall. The results tell another story, which won't change no matter how many jobs she quits, how many hip-waders she wears, how many Prada jackets line her closet, or how many phony winks and "you betchas!" to which all of us will be endlessly, mercilessly, and stupefyingly subjected.
We love you Sarah...Keep giving the libs hell.
If you weren't afraid of her. You would not bring her name up, and try to destroy her. Y'all would just let her go away. Your supposed higher intellect gave us Obama. NOT TOO GOOD. He had apologized to the whole world because America is a successful country. when is he going to apologize to the US. For what he is doing to it.
Adam: As to the grammar of "100 words or less," here's American Heritage:
“The traditional rule holds that fewer should be used for things that can be counted (fewer than four players), while less should be used with mass terms for things of measurable extent (less paper; less than a gallon of paint). However, less is used in some constructions where fewer would occur if the traditional rule were being followed... Less is sometimes used with plural nouns in the expressions no less than (as in No less than 30 of his colleagues signed the letter) and or less (as in Give your reasons in 25 words or less).”
(found here: http://mightyredpen.wordpress.com/2008/02/09/less-vs-fewer/)
The left loves Sarah Palin. Aside from the entertainment value, she helped hand the presidency to Obama on a silver platter, and her continued participation in politics could only help other Democrats in the future. But I don't see her running for president, because she knows that if she did, she'd have to debate people like Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee. We certainly don't need her devisiveness, such as her pitting small-town America against the rest of us, and her snarky lies about Obama and terrorists.
If Sarah Palin really loves this country, she will disappear from the limelight. She needs to take a civics class. She needs to go fishing. She needs to go hunting. We don't need her.
Tommy: Way to get the page views up with this topic. It serves no other purpose.
I don't fear Palin, I just think of her in the same vein as dog pooh on the sidewalk. She's something that is unpleasant and to be avoided, and if not avoided, scraped off the bottom of the shoe as soon as possible, before the stench pollutes an area bigger than Alaska.
Political toast
She blew it.
it is interesting how the left crucifies smart free-thinking women that are also pretty.
very confusing. not all "smart" political-worthy women have to look horrid like sonya, michelle, and hilary.
Hey Tommy what do I win when you pick my post?
A date with Sarah, to a David Letterman show?
I started to write about her lack of political prowess, her strange zig-when-zag-made-more-sense moves, and even Todd's goatee. Then I realized that she could track, shoot, skin, and gut me like a caribou. So, I'll keep my comments to myself.
Are we penalized for a second posting on the same topic if the accumulated word count exceeds 100?
If not, I’d like to note that “Palin the Pawn” was a chess piece in the McCain Campaign’s strategy. The GOP convention came first, and so his supporters worried that if Hillary Clinton got the VP nod at the Dem’s gathering, there would go the women’s vote. By choosing Palin, the most likely Republican female to attract votes, McCain mitigated that possibility, but took the risk of a backlash if Palin proved to be a liability. Oh, for a crystal ball!
One is one too many.
She is perfect sinkhole for the idiot vote.
The biggest joke of Sarah Palin's political career?
Sarah Palin
She is the lowest form of rabble rousing empty vessel politicians. I sincerely hope she DOES get the gop nod int he next presidential election. That will virtually GUARANTEE a victory for her oponent.
Maybe it's time for the Christian Conservatives to have their OWN political party and she can be its leader.
To quote Lily Von Schtup in Blazing Saddles, she is finished ! Fertig! Verfallen! Verlumpt! Verblunget! Verkackt!
1:54: Anyone who can work in a "Blazing Saddles" reference is all right with me.
Sarah's future is as my misstress.
Real journalism going on here.
Now, apparently, the so-called journalists don't even have to write stories. They just post controversial names and wait for the name-calling to begin.
BTW, I'm no Palin fan, either.
She gives voice to the resentment anad grievances of about 30% of America-but that's all. I know of many life-long Republicans who simply could not vote for McCain last fall because of her. Even if the GOP nominates her in 2012, she'd lose. She's her own worst enemy. It's imposiible to think of her other than what she is-a poorly educated, self-absorbed, winking little tart.
http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutgrammar/lessfewer?view=uk
Tommy, according to this, it'd be "less than 100 words" but "100 words or fewer."
Either way, let's agree to disagree and focus on saving the world. It sounds like more fun.
the post from 2:08 says it best, she IS her own worst enemy. Every time she opens her mouth, she alienates another group somewhere. She may be attractive, but she is NOT intelligent and doesn't have the political expertise of a fly. McCain loss was as large as it was because of Palin on the ticket. As a woman, I was embarrassed for her.
better be careful saying you like Blazing Saddles on here Tommy.
People will go off on that like normal in these blogs.
I love that movie though, good times.
Bart
Sarah Palin will try for the 2012 presidential nomination, fail, and fade into political history. She will do whatever it takes, however, to remain in the public spotlight. She will most likely end up as an ultra-conservative political commentator, with a small but hard-core following.
Sarah Palin will continue to stick to her moral and ethical stance; she'll become a greater political player than anyone on the right ever imagined and those on the left feared; she will continue to puzzle and dazzle. Like a north woodsman she will survive the harshest of challenges and be stonger for them!
Can I really be bothered saying 'DANGEROUS IDIOT' 100 times ?
...mmm!
Sorry, that should have been 50 times; who's the dangerous idiot now?
Aspirational not inspirational.
Lets see.... Obama or Palin? It seems to me Obama graduated top of his class at Harvard Law School and Palin? Does she even have an undergrad degree? She went to so many schools to get it if she does, would you ever be sure? And since she is "so good at interviews" Thumbs down to Palin for Pres
crThe press and ivy leaguers on the left and right are apoplectic b/c when Palin freely relinquished power, she stripped them of theirs. They made her the subject of public ridicule, and held the threat of "losing" her office over her head with their constant "ethics" inquiries. When she walked away it left them holding the bat and ball and no one to play with. The fact is, the founding fathers did not envision a professional "ruling class" built on offices gained just to build a resume that "justified" even higher office - aka John Edwards, who used NC for his presidential aspirations. Palin is succeeding outside the rigid paradigm set by the insiders in the press and both parties who have decided they own the political process. I was not formerly a big fan of Palin, but I am starting to like her more and more and hope she will succeed in spite of, and maybe even because of, the protestations of this "ruling class" who deem anyone outside their ivy-covered gates an "intellectual lightweight" who is "not ready". Sarah Palin is more than ready to take on this incestuous, gate-keeping cabal. Like Reagan before her, those who underestimate her do so at their own risk.
Sarah Palin will never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never be President Of The United States!
A quitter who can't handle the heat as governor of the bustling state of Alaska? What makes her think she could ever handle the heat of the presidency? She's vapid, underinformed, and under the delusion that she's been tapped by God for the big stage. But quitters are never winners...over and out!
Sarah Palin will, for the foreseeable future, be the darling of stupid people in large numbers. Whether those numbers will be large enough to impact the rest of the country remains to be seen.
Wow...she's your first topic of this new format...well, I guess you could say she will win in the long run with the millions she is going to make as a conversative voice on Fox, Rush, etc. She should forget politics and make all the money she can to compensate the complete slaughter the press did on her during the campaign and now, months later. I have never seen a VP candidate receive this much coverage AFTER the election. Quite frankly, she is above politics now and can do better.
Why is the media, and liberals generally, so absolutely terrified of Sarah Palin? Perhaps because a successful, smart, woman, who didn't murder her special needs child in the womb and who did it without the permission of the media and NOW is the opposite of the opposite message than what gets printed in the paper every day.
You go Sarah, A LOT of us are behind you for all the medias published hate.
I am not quite sure how anyone can make fun of Palin's intellect when I can assure you she is smarter than our mr. teleprompter president who has NEVER had a job in his entire life and will destroy this country to where it is nothing but a bunch of misfits. Read Glenn Beck's Common Sense book and then you will appreciate Palin. Also, if you NEVER read Obama's books he wrote PRIOR to running for office----you should. You will see the true nature of this scary man.
I kinda see Palin stepping down and giving the liberal media the middle finger. I agree with Rebecca's post. Once the little ol' threat of not getting elected was gone, she is now in control. They really can't do much now. Also regarding the father of her grandchild, look at billy carter from the 70's and roger clinton from 90's. look at our current freako Barney Frank. I will take the Levi baggage anyday.
Sarah - please run as the Republican nominee in 2012.
Signed, a Democrat who thinks we can whip ya.
All I can say is the Saturday Night Live writers are ITCHING to be in season right now. Michael Jackson, Gov. Sanford, Sotomayor, Palin, Obama, Madoff....I'm no writer, but I don't think it would be too difficult to make people laugh one night a week for 2 hours with this kind of material! You betcha, wink!
please explain to me why she would be qualified to be president?
8 years as mayor of a town the size of waxhaw.
quit halfway thru her term just as the states were going thru the worst economic downturn...
and who takes EVERY political slight personally....
hmmm thats who i want to lead our country...
She is going to be a real loser!
Anyone that believes she is a good politician does not have much of political knowledge.
It amazes me that people can cut down Palin's expereince and then think Obama was actually expereinced enough to be president. She is probably more exprience than a community organizer. The liberal media is to blame for the difference in the way people look at each. This same media, including the observer, are contributing to the downfall of the USA because they are so far to the left. Palin will make millions. She irritates so many because she represents NORMAL America.
one word
quitter
For a different slant on Sarah Palin, Google "David Letterman's Hate, Etc." And "Michael the Narc-Angel" on Google is hot too. M.E.
"She irritates so many because she represents NORMAL America."
Wrong - she represents the worst of America. The ignorant, bigoted, myth-worshipping, lemmings who continue to insist that she is indeed "smart", and would rather have a president who knows how to skin a walrus than one who understands adult problems like science, economics, and international relations. We're talking about the most important elected official in the world, not Miss Trailer Trash 2012.
QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER,QUITTER
wow 4:35...you just summed it up for me. well put...
I predict, Sarah Palin will run for Governor of South Carolina and build a large political base in the South east.
To paraphrase Hamlet, liberals "doth protest Sarah Palin too much, methinks." Fear, perhaps?
SP was probably effective for her time in space for Alaska but a less likely leader for a world leader. She is probably a nice normal person that would like to get out of the political fray and make some bucks while she can still capitalize off of her 15 minutes of fame.
She should have never been considered for a VP run.....I decided that McCain could not possibly have any brains after he chose her. I want someone with intellect to run my country.
Boy, the liberal assassins are out in force today...so much for "tolerance".
Sarah Palin is just getting started on the national political stage.
In spite of all the liberal dump, she has the goods to bring a load of positive energy and momentum to the Republican party.
She is a real woman, married to a real man. They have a real family with real issues just like everybody else, only they admit it. They have had real jobs, employed people, made payrolls, and paid taxes.
Their son is in the military, helping to defend this great nation. She understands patriotism at a personal level.
She worked her way from hockey mom to governor, with an 80% approval rating. She took on corruption in both parties. She has a moral compass.
She is the mom of a special needs child, whom she clearly loves with all her heart. She values life.
I'll take all this any day over the pompous, arogant, financially incontinent stuffed shirts inside the Beltway. Sarah has more real world experience, smarts and charisma than all of them.
I'd like to see her help spearhead a New Conservative Party. Perhaps, she, along with other true conservatives, can create a political entity that can truly accomplish something other than the status quo. As for Palin, the amount of negativity aimed at her is nothing short of astonishing. She & her family have been given a media high colonic of epic proportions. Hell...no one can even say Barack's middle name-much less criticize him!!! And all because she had the audacity to accept a job offer. But I think she may become a senator at some point.
I do not know what lies in the future for Gov. Palin but I do know what lies in the future for those who continue to attack her.It will quickly become an attack on motherhood, apple pie and everything American to speak ill of her. Were it not so, nobody would be talking about her now. You Betcha!
I'm still trying to figure out her resignation speech. "I hate quitters and I now quit as governor." Huh? Political life, done! Melodrama and comedy material, to the moon!
Palin will end up with a few paragraphs in the history books. Maybe even a footnote or two. She has no political future to speak of.
That's about all you can expect for someone who basically made a fool out of herself every time she opened her mouth during interviews.
It isn't that she's not likeable or attractive. She's just dumb.
Dumb politicians are a dime a dozen in all political parties. We don't need any more dumb politicians.
Sarah? Go away. Just go away.
Who cares? I mean, really. How about something that's important? Do you think the Panthers will make the playoffs? Who's your favorite 5 Panther players. You know, things are are truly important in our lives.
Who cares? I mean, really. How about something that's important? Do you think the Panthers will make the playoffs? Who's your favorite 5 Panther players. You know, things are are truly important in our lives.
All you libs wouldn't have your panties in a wad over her if she wasn't a threat. Watch out. she's gonna getcha!!!
If there is any reason for Sarah Palin to drop out of politics I can't find it.
She loves the spot light and she has a following despite the fact that we in the lower 48 only pay attention to Alaska when oil tankers break up, whales are at risk and sled dogs run a 1000 miles race.
My take of Sarah Palin from last November http://cedarposts.blogspot.com/2008/11/24-hours-with-sarah-palin.html
Pote1995 - it offends me that because she is an attractive woman you make the comment that "sex sells." She's a governor, a wife, a mother of 5, and a grandmother. How many of those who support her do so because she's "a looker" as you say? I'm sure you would also be the first to call her a "dog" if she wasn't attractive. Disgusting.
Small
Poorly educated
Lacks dignity
Hungry for the spotlight
Way way over her head outside of Wasilla
Confused about basic proprietary for public leaders
Willing to lie in the service of advancement
Willing to use political position for personal advantage
Trained to use physical attractiveness to gain affection
Plays on people's simplest thoughts and shallowest values
Will ultimately betray the best interests of those who place the most trust in her, such as she just did with the 115,000 Alaskans who voted for her.
Why is it that anyone who isn't infatuated with Sarah Palin or her politics is tagged a "Liberal", as though that were a dirty word?
Back in my day, intelligent people debated an issue by first taking a neutral stance. Then they looked at the benefits or drawbacks thereof. If it was a national issue, they looked at what the highest law in the land (i.e Constitution) had to say - or probably would say - and made a sound decision.
Intelligent Americans are Moderates: Liberal on some issues, Conservative on others, depending upon the merits.
Palin - Plumber (Joe the plumber)in 2012. What a ticket. They'd get 100% of the votes of the 5% of the poplulation that think paper money is a liberal ploy to socialize the country.
I hope she'll take the chance to re-connect w/ her family. I believe she'll seize the spotlight in any way it's offered. I hate that the female candidates (so far) have both been people I don't trust/like/want in power. hopefully there will be a worthy one soon.
Palin is tha gratest thang since cameros an' mullets an' even WCW . She can fish an' hunt an' everythin good. She wint to colege n' that meens she's smart. She talks liike a commun persun an' dat iz good for Amireca. we dunt need no Ivee Leage persun runnin' da show. We need sumwun who can hunt and say buzzwerds. Evan dough she ain't a lawyer or even had a big job sides bein a quit gubinor- I want her in charge 'casue sheez Maverik liike me.
I think the media has been harsh on her and she was totally unqualified to be in the position she was in the first place. I have no personal problem with her, and I appreciate some of the things she was able to do for alaska, but I think it was really just window dressing and not really great substance. I would've voted for McCain had she not been on his ticket, and now I'm more upset that she was on the ticket than ever.
America needs (and recently elected) someone "real" in politics. Someone who can relate to the people, who has a good mind and can juggle all the sides in a complex, flailing system.
Palin is NOT that person. She has strengths, she represents the common man, (which people should not discount) but her weaknesses far outweigh them. She may survive politically, but currently her narrow thinking, limited understanding of history, and crisis mentality is shameful for a U.S. political leader.
Perhaps she took time off to learn the responsibilities government and take a speech class. We can all improve ourselves.
I am one of the few people in this country who will admit to being a registered Democrat who voted for McCain-Palin. Whatever she chooses to do with her life, more power to her! Too bad she and Hillary Clinton can't be on the same ticket...
Alaska: gold rush days, the shining the stars above. The fish. We our families hope. Change but keeping fierce values. Proud, the caribou and bear fat in our rootcellars and freezers. Forward to the past. Pass the gas, and darn the impeders. Because we know, actors speak louder than work. Bless us all.
