He's Prince, and I'm old

I'm a big football fan but the best part of the Super Bowl was Prince rocking the halftime show.

In 20 minutes he touched on a bunch of his hits, covered snippets of "Proud Mary," "All Along the Watchtower" and the Foo Fighters' "The Best of You," and unfurled a big white curtain that turned his guitar into a giant phallic symbol. (Take that, Janet Jackson.)

But then I started thinking about it. The first Prince show I saw was in 1986. Children conceived that night (and I'm guessing there were a few) are halfway through college now.

And then I realized that Prince is officially an oldies act, or they wouldn't have put him on the Super Bowl halftime show. (Billy Joel did the national anthem, and I'm proud to report he left the field without his walker.)

And THEN I remembered reading that Prince has jumped around on stage so much that he might need... a hip replacement.

Good Lord.

Anybody else have a moment like that lately? Write in and make me feel better. Until then I need some warm milk and a nap.

I was at a local club this weekend and I started chatting with the chick next to me in the bathroom line. She mentioned that she had been in high school band with the guys that were playing onstage. I don't even think all of them were old enough to drink! I immediately wanted to go home to bed. I felt 100 years old.

I always thought that Prince was part of my daughter's genre of music - forgot that he has been around for a long time and he be 49 on June 7.

You are not alone. My husband and I commented that the young "fans" on the field (who we all know are plants) were singing along to songs they likely did not know. I felt as old as dirt!

You're only as old as you feel....
And there's no NEED to feel old.
Prince has aged pretty gracefully and it's due in large part to a positive attitude about it. I've tried to follow that lead and stay young as long as I can.

Oh yeah...by the way, the rumor about him needing hip replacement surgery is just that...a rumor. It's been circulating widely on the net for a year or more now. i saw him in concert at his club in vegas two weeks ago and let me tell you...he hasn't lost a step.

No need to feel old since even the young ones don't listen to the "new" music - I was looking at my 18-year son's music library and pretty much 85% is music made in the late 60s, 70s and 80s - and about 10% is stuff never heard on any radio station. I asked him why and he said because "my generation's music sucks!" (out of the mouths of babes)

I first saw Prince on the old American Bandstand. He was very, very young and extremely talented. The funny thing was, that Dick Clark had a hard time conversing with Prince because he was so shy.....

The Purple One did a great job! I was somewhat concerned with that doo rag he had on his head, but none-the-less, Prince was great.

I still consider myself a young one. Twenty-four, and I thought Prince rocked it out. I grew up listening to his music and have always loved it. That man is 49? Man he is a great looking 49.

At 20/10 years of age I almost cried when I realized everyone on that field had no idea of the wonder that was Purple Rain circa 1988. They don't know what it's like to ask your mother WHY Nikka was mas-her-bating with a magazine! LOL

Oh, good times.

He was awesome though and I am trying hard to catch his act in Vegas. If that's 49, 20/10 is looking a whole lot better.
